Four Galilean Horoscopes: An Analysis of Galileo's Astrological Techniques

Bernadette Brady

Abstract

In a recent paper in the Journal of the History of Astronomy Noel Swerdlow moved beyond considerations of the historical context of Galileo's astrology, or of Galileo's own attitude to astrology, into the technical analysis of extant horoscopes in Galileo's own hand. This paper extends that work with an examination, based on Galileo's own notes, of four charts from his manuscript, the Astrologica Nonnulla; Giovanfrancesco Sagredo, Cesare Galli and his daughters Virginia and Livia.
